Welcome to our forum for former and current merchant seamen who want to keep in touch with old friends.
AhoyShipmates.com was set up in the summer of 2005 for my uncle: award-winning Geordie playwright, John Barnshaw. He served in the Merchant Navy and would like to meet up with others to renew old friendships and share reminiscences about life at sea. H found that many of his friends at the local Merchant Seamen's Club in South Shields felt the same way, and they couldn't find any resources available on the internet set up specifically for them.
So, the idea of a website like this was born. Hopefully, you will find it useful. If there are any other features you would like to see added to the site, feel free to drop me a private message from the board.
The first thing you should do is register on the board. It's free, and it gives you many privileges that you don't get as a guest. Plus, if I need to, I may have to lock the boards so that only registered users can post.
Once you have registered, feel free to post in any of the forums. You may be looking for an old friend, replying to a post someone else has made, or requestinging/giving advice about developing a career in the Merchant Navy. There's even a forum for you just to tell a story about the good old days.
So, enter the forum and search for old shipmates.
